If you’re an editor or a teacher who needs to assess writers’ or students’ content regularly for originality, an AI detection tool will certainly come in handy.
GPT Zero and Originality AI are two of the most popular AI detection tools out there right now.
Today, I’d like to review both tools and find out which one would be the best fit for your needs.
I’ll try to test the tools in 5 categories in particular:
- AI Content Detection
- Plagiarism Detection
- Usability
- Team Collaboration
- Value for Money
Let’s dive right in!
GPT Zero vs Originality AI Quick Comparison Table
In case you’re in a rush and don’t have the time to go through the whole blog, you can check out the table below.
It sums up the results of the tests I have done.
A detailed breakdown of each test is given right after the table.

Features of Originality AI
Originality AI, while primarily known for detecting AI content, comes equipped with loads of features for those who love authentic content.
Let’s look at some of the incredible features it offers:
- AI Detection: AI detection is what Originality AI is known for. It’s arguably the best AI detection tool out there.
- Plagiarism Detection: You won’t have to get a subscription from Grammarly or Copyscape once you have Originality AI, cause it also offers an accurate plagiarism checker.
- Fact-Checking: What makes Originality AI unique among the many AI and plagiarism detection tools is its fact-checking feature. This prevents writers from sneaking in false information.
- Readability Checker: Finally, the readability checking makes Originality a complete content optimization tool. This will help writers make content even more easy to consume for the readers.
This already sounds like a deal too good to be true. If all the features are working as they’re being claimed you’re getting to know whether the content is completely human-written, user-friendly, and unique all at the same time!
Features of GPT Zero
GPT Zero unlike Originality, doesn’t have plenty of features. Let’s find out some of its offerings:
- AI Content Detection: GPT Zero, too has its own content detection mechanism. I’ll find out how accurate it is later on in this blog.
- API: One good thing about GPT Zero is it offers API. It will boost productivity for individuals and teams alike. Customization support can also requested via email

GPT Zero vs Originality AI – A Head to Head Comparison
When it comes to checking your document for AI content, only a few names will come to mind: Originality, Zero GPT, or GPT Zero.
These are by far the most trusted AI detection platforms among netizens right now.
However, there’s a “good, bad, and ugly” situation here. Although known to be somewhat accurate, each tool has its unique weaknesses and targets a specific customer group.
1. Accuracy in AI Content Detection
The first thing that comes to mind whenever you’re talking about AI content detection is accuracy.
You’d trust the tool that offers the most accurate results. So, which one is more accurate? GPT Zero or Originality AI?
I have done some tests myself:
Accuracy Test 1 – Content Copied from Jasper
Jasper is known as one of the top AI content generation tools available to date. It brands itself as a premium segment AI content generator and is highly well-received by writers and editors alike. Let’s see if it can pass Zero GPT or Originality AI’s detection.
Here is my content titled ‘GPT Zero vs. Originality AI: A Comparative Analysis,’ generated on Jasper:
Let’s first run it through GPT Zero’s premium ‘Deep Scan.’
Well, they were able to detect AI in the Jasper content.
It’s Originality AI’s turn now
Just like GPT Zero, Originality AI was also able to easily detect AI in our content
Accuracy Test 2 – Directly Copying From Chat GPT
Let’s give it another try, this time using Chat GPT content.
First, I instructed ChatGPT to write, “Who is better, GPT Zero or Originality AI?”
I pasted the result into both GPT Zero and Originality AI directly, and both said the content was 100% generated using AI.
GPT Zero shows that the content was written entirely using AI. ( Caption)
Originality was able to detect the AI-generated content too.
Let’s be a bit realistic now. Nobody will just copy and paste content directly from Chat GPT or Jasper. Most likely, they’ll do some tweaking here and there before submission. In this case, paraphrasing tool like Quillbot is often used to save time. The idea is to paraphrase the AI content using Quillbot to pass detection.
I will follow in their footsteps, paraphrase my AI written content with Quillbot, and check whether GPT Zero or Originality AI can detect my manipulations.
Accuracy Test 3 – After Paraphrasing AI Content Using Quillbot
Well, I’ve just paraphrased the content using QuillBot. (I couldn’t paraphrase the entire output since I’m using the free plan of QuillBot.)
Well, now it’s time to run the content through GPT Zero
After paraphrasing the content with QuillBot, GPT Zero failed to detect the AI. It classified the text as 52% human-written, 6% mixed, and 42% AI.
Since this was a ‘Basic Scan’ under GPT Zero’s free plan, I thought it wasn’t fair to compare a free tool against a paid one, i.e., Originality AI. So, I purchased a paid package from GPT Zero and ran what they call a ‘Deep Scan’.
Surprisingly, the results were even worse, detecting 72% as human-written, 5% mixed, and only 22% AI!
Now, it’s time to put Originality AI to the test.
While both the free and paid plans of GPT Zero failed after I paraphrased the content using QuillBot, Originality AI was smart enough to detect my sneaky Quilbot tactic.
It identified the content as 100% AI this time as well.
So in terms of accuracy in detecting AI content Originality AI far outperforms GPT Zero.
The Winner of the AI Detection Accuracy Test – Originality AI 👑
The winner of the AI detection accuracy test goes to Originality. It’s common sense that writers with even a slight bit of experience will never use AI content as it is.
They would certainly add in some flavor here and there and try to pass it off as original.
And that’s where Originality AI is exceptionally precise in detection. Even if writers use paraphrasers, it will be able to detect where GPT Zero fails.
Just to let you know, I used the ‘Standard 2.0’ detection model, which was good enough to provide accurate results.
They also have a more advanced AI detection model called ‘Turbo 3.0’. However, I sometimes found it to mark manually written content as AI, so I’d suggest using the ‘Standard 2.0’ model for a more balanced reading.
Content | Detected by Originality AI | Detected by GPT Zero |
ChatGPT | Yes | Yes |
Jasper | Yes | Yes |
Paraphrased AI Content | Yes | No |
Is GPT Zero Accurate?
After careful analysis, it’s clear that GPT Zero accurately detects content directly pasted from AI generation tools without any changes. However, if you manually paraphrase the content or use Quillbot, it has a harder time catching it. So, opinions on GPT Zero’s accuracy can vary from person to person.
2. Plagiarism Detection Test
We’re done with AI detection; now it’s time to determine which tool remains ahead in terms of detecting plagiarism.
I’ve just found a blog on Tech Radar about the ‘best coffee maker of 2024’ which can be used for the test.
I will now copy and paste a portion of this live blog into both Originality AI and GPT Zero to determine which one succeeds in detecting plagiarism.
First, I copied the introductory part of the content and checked it in Originality AI, which cost me around two credits. However, the results were not good, as it failed to detect any plagiarism whatsoever.
Now it’s time to check the same intro in GPT Zero.
Thankfully, GPT Zero was able to detect plagiarism and found that 98% of the text was available online.
Winner of the Plagiarism Detection Test – GPT Zero 👑
GPT Zero is superbly precise at detecting plagiarism, while Originality AI, on the other hand, failed to detect any plagiarized content.
The page I scanned was published two weeks back on a renowned website like Tech Radar and is well within Google’s index. Still, Originality AI’s failure to detect plagiarism shows its inability to scan live data from the web.
So, if checking plagiarism is your main goal, I’d definitely recommend GPT Zero.
3. Usability
Apart from detection capabilities, the ease of navigation through the tool is also highly important.
Users prefer interfaces that are intuitive and easy to use. Having used both tools, I have a solid understanding of how their user interfaces and website layouts are designed.
Here is what the homepage of Originality AI looks like:
You can see all the features have been laid out in a highly intuitive manner. What I like about Originality AI is its simplicity. Even people who aren’t tech-savvy can easily browse through their website.
You can also find a statistical breakdown of the scans you have done at the bottom.
All the options are clearly visible within the almost all the pages, giving you a very clear idea of what’s happening.
When it comes to GPT Zero, it’s just the opposite. While I have found the tool to be excellent, especially for checking plagiarism, their UX is terrible .
Just take a look at their homepage content.
Anything below the heading is barely visible.
As you have already seen in my previous screenshots, even when you try to view the AI/plagiarism detection score on GPT Zero, you literally need to put on glasses to clearly see the different scores.
The website isn’t intuitive either, making it very difficult for general users to navigate.
Take a look at the image below for comparison. You will find that the score are clearly visible on Originality AI, while on GPT Zero, the text is hazy.
Winner of the Usability Test – Originality AI 👑
Originality AI is clearly the winner here with its exceptionally intuitive user interface. What makes it unique is the use of large fonts and eye-catching buttons that are clearly visible throughout the website, making it much easier to use.
4.Team Collaboration
Both Originality AI and GPT Zero allow their users to give access to their team members. Let’s see how this works out. For Originality AI, sharing access to your team members is actually pretty straightforward.
First, you click on ‘My Team’ on the left menu bar on the homepage:
Then click the ‘Add New Member’ button.
Add your team member’s name, email address, specify his/her role, and click on ‘Add Member’.
The invitation email is sent immediately.
Logging in as a user is pretty simple too. You just have to put in your email as your password, and later you get to set your own password.
So, I logged in and did a scan as an editor without anything going wrong.
Now let’s see how team collaboration works in GPT Zero. I clicked on ‘My Team’, then selected ‘Create Team’ and entered the team name:
Next, I added the team member’s name, email, assigned the role, and clicked ‘Add’.
It says that the team was created successfully. Let’s check my email for the invitation mail.
I logged in successfully; so far, everything looks smooth.
As soon as I tried to start a new scan, a payment message popped up. This seemed strange because I had already purchased a package from GPT Zero, but it wasn’t being shared with the team member.
I checked my team information and discovered that the team was running on the ‘Free Plan’.
After this, I realized that you cannot share access to your monthly package with your team members.
If you want to provide access to GPT Zero’s premium subscription to your team members, you will have to purchase an additional monthly package separately for the team.
To be honest, this is quite frustrating and feels like a loophole for the company to earn more. While it’s completely within their rights to charge however they please, I personally found it dislikable.
Moreover, the process was quite complicated, and this information was not explicitly provided earlier, so I had to go through a trial and error process to find it out.
Team Collaboration Performance Winner – Originality AI 👑
Without a doubt, if you’re seeking to collaborate with your team, Originality AI would certainly be a better option.
You can easily grant access to your editors or writers to have their content checked by Originlaity AI.
Value for Money
Finally, I’m going to evaluate the tools based on the value they offer for the price.
While both Originality AI and GPT Zero offer paid plans, GPT Zero actually provides a free plan to check over 10,000 words of content monthly for AI detection.
While this is good news for students and those who prefer not to spend on AI content detection, GPT Zero’s free plan only allows for a ‘Basic Scan’ to detect AI content.
All other features such as Deep Scan, Plagiarism Scan, Writing Feedback, and Multilingual detection are not available.
Caption: These 4 features are not available in GPT Zero
Given that I’ve already dismissed GPT Zero’s AI detection capabilities due to its inability to detect paraphrased AI content, I don’t find GPT Zero’s free plan worth it at this point.
Originality AI, on the other hand, has always branded itself as a completely premium tool, and you cannot use it without going past the paywall.
Their Pro monthly plan starts at $14.95, and the Enterprise plan starts at $179. You can get these for $12.45 and $136.58, respectively, if you opt for their yearly package. They also have a Pay As You Go top-up system.
You get 3000 credits for $30; however, these credits expire in one month. When I got Originality AI, they didn’t have that limitation, and I have been using it for almost two years with a $20 top-up.
GPT Zero’s monthly plans are somewhat similar. The Essential plan starts at $15, the Premium plan at $24, and the Professional plan at $35. The yearly plans for each package are $10, $16, and $23, respectively.
Winner of the Value for Money – Originality AI 👑
You already know who the winner is: Originality AI. The pricing structure for both tools is more or less similar. While you can easily share credits with team members in Originality AI, the same isn’t true for GPT Zero. You will have to buy a separate plan for the team.
Plus, my main goal is to detect AI content, and Originality AI outperforms GPT Zero in this category.
So, if you’re considering overall value for money, I’d keep Originality AI ahead.
Should We Even Use AI Detection Tools?
Now let’s tackle the toughest question: should we or should we not use AI detection tools? Well, in my opinion, if you’re an experienced editor, you won’t really need an AI detector to spot poorly written content. It doesn’t matter whether content was written by AI or a human; what matters is whether the content answers the queries, is backed by research, and maintains good overall quality. Even though sometimes human-written content is worse than quality AI-generated content.
Here are some reasons you shouldn’t use AI detection tools:
1. They Detect Original Content as AI-Generated
During my usage, I’ve found Originality AI to be the most accurate AI detection tool out there. Yet, even Originality AI detects original content as AI. Now you can guess the state of other AI detection tools. I ran the United States Declaration of Independence through Originality, and it flagged it as AI-generated. I shared this hilarious story on my LinkedIn.
2. They May Use Guesswork or Be a Scam Rather Than Any Actual Analysis
Many theories are out there, and some believe these tools are a total scam. They may not use any analysis at all or might flag a particular syntactical pattern as AI. But what if a human uses that syntactical pattern?
3. See, Accountants Use Calculators; Why Can’t Writers Use AI?
Our goal should be quality content, not the medium. AI is here to stay, and that’s certain. It’s better if we use it wisely instead of trying to limit its use. That said, I’m not talking about just copying and pasting AI-generated content without any human oversight.
Should We Even Use AI Detection Tools?
Now let’s come to the hardest part should we or should we not use AI detection tools. In my opinion if you’re an experienced editor you won’t really need an AI detector to detect poorly written content in the first place. It doesn’t matter whether a content was written by AI or a human wrote it what matters is whether the content is answering the queries backed by research and the overall quality is good. Sometimes even human written content are bad compared to quality AI generated content. Here are some of the reasons you shouldn’t use AI decetion tools in the first place:
They Would Detect Original Content To be Written By AI
During my usage I have found Originality AI to be the most accurate AI detection tools out there. Yet even Originality AI detecets original content as AI. now you can guess the state of other AI detection tools. I ran the United States Declaration of Independence through Originality and it detected to be AI generated. I shared this hillarious story on my LinkedIn
May Use Guesswork or Scam than Any Actual Analysis
Many theories are out there and some believe that these tools are totally scam. They may not use any analaysis at all or may flag a particular syntacitcal pattern to be AI. But what if a human use that syntatical parttern?
Accountants Use Calculators Why Can’t Writers Use AI?
Our goals should be qualiy content not the medium. AI is here to stay and that’s certain. It’s better if we use it wise instead of trying to limit its use. Obviously I’m not taking about just generating low quality content and posting it online AI can certainly be used to create outstanding quality content.
GPT Zero or Originality AI? Which One Should I Go For?
Well, after a thorough review of both tools, I’ve reached the end of the blog with my final judgment. So, which one is better? GPT Zero has performed exceptionally well in plagiarism detection; however, apart from this single feature, it has been outperformed by Originality AI in the all the other categories.
What I understood after using the paid version of both tools is that these tools are specifically targeted to particular customer groups.
GPT Zero, created by Princeton grad Tian, largely focuses on issues within academia. As a result, the plagiarism detection is super precise. However, but would fail to detect the slightest manipulations in content written by AI. I’d recommend this for teachers who want to check their students’ submissions for plagiarism.
Originality AI, on the other hand, is a premium tool that focuses on detecting AI-generated content. It is specifically designed for digital marketers and content managers who need to deal with a large volume of content and ensure writers are delivering completely original material.
